2017 Scholastics Art & Writing Awards

More fantastic news!  The selection process for the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has been completed and, once again, several Topeka West photography students were invited to have their images shown at MARK Arts (formerly the Wichita Center for the Arts) from January 27 - March 5, 2017.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is a national art and writing competition with regional shows held in each state. If a student has their work selected they are awarded one of three awards: Honorable Mention, Silver Key Award, or Gold Key Award. After the regional show has concluded the Gold Key Award pieces are automatically selected to be juried for the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards that are held in Washington, D.C. over the summer.

Last year one of Topeka West's photography students was awarded a Gold Key at the national level!!

Please join me in congratulating these students on their amazing accomplishment! This is a very selective competition showcasing the best of art from high schools in the state of Kansas. All of our students should be very proud!!

UPDATE: 2017 Kansans...As Talented As You Think! High School Art Competition

The final judging has been completed in the Kansans...As Talented As You Think! high school art competition.  If you recall from a previous post, Topeka West seniors Jasmine Lang and Christian Brown had their images selected as finalists in the competition.

Just the other day I received an email stating that Jasmine's photography, Big Wheels Keep On Turning, has been chosen as the winner in the Black and White Photography category!

Jasmine Lang, senior          Big Wheels Keep On Turning (Black/White Photography category winner)

And, immediately after reading that email another one arrived stating that Christian's photo, Chinese New Year, had won the Color Photography category!!

Jasmine and Christian will be recognized as the winners of their respective categories (and awarded a $100 scholarship!) at the Native Sons and Daughters Kansas Day Banquet the evening of January 27th at the Maner Conference Center.

Allow me to extend a huge thank you to Jasmine, Christian, and all of the other students who participated in this competition!!

New Work: Digital Photography 2 & Media Technology

Though this isn't a very expansive gallery of work, I'm extremely proud of the images that were created by the Digital Photography 2 and Media Technology classes last semester!

The Media Technology students will continue to add to their portfolio of work this semester and I am extremely excited by the sheer number of students that are currently enrolled in Digital Photography 2 for the spring semester:  41 as of the first day of school!!

As always, myself and all the photography students thank you for your continued support of our program!  Have a fantastic start to the new semester!!

New Work: Digital Photography 1

The fall semester has come to an end and WOW what another fantastic finish with the Digital Photography 1 students!!  Between the three sections of Digital Photography 1 this semester almost 1200 images were printed.  Many of our students created some of their best images within just the past few weeks and, as always, it is extremely difficult to narrow it down to a selection of 30.

Please enjoy this last post of the semester and I hope you are continuing to look forward to the images created by the Spring semester students as they begin to create!

(And, as always, feel free to tell our students that you viewed their work on the blog and click on the images to view them in a larger slideshow.)
