2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

It is most certainly a banner year for the Topeka West Art and Photography departments!  In addition to placing exceptionally well in the Kansans...As Talented As You Think high school art competition, a disproportionally high number of students will showcase their work at the 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional show to be held at the Wichita Center for the Arts during the month of February.

84 pieces of photography, drawing, painting, jewelry, and sculpture were submitted to this year's competition.  27 pieces were accepted to the show (woohoo!), and 20 out of those 27 pieces are photographs created by our Digital Photography 1 and Advanced Photography students (BAM!).

Way to go West!!

The 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will open on February 4 and run through March 9 at the Wichita Center for the Arts in Wichita, Kansas.

UPDATE: Kansans...As Talented As You Think! High School Art Competition

During the first week of December 2013, the Topeka West photography program received great news about the Kansans...As Talented As You Think! high school art competition. Senior Brent Lambert and junior Molly Taggart had both placed as finalists in the Black & White photography category.

This past Friday I was checking my school email during a break of that day's professional development activities and I was astounded by two messages that I received.  The final judging of the competition had taken place and Molly was awarded the winner of the Black & White photography category!  Then the next email announced that Brent had won Best of Show!!  What this means is that Molly will receive a $100 scholarship for winning her category and Brent will receive a $300 scholarship for winning over all the other finalists!!

Congratulations Molly and Brent!  And a huge thank you to the Kansas Native Sons and Daughters for hosting the award ceremony and to Grant Glenn and Don Lambert for helping to provide this special opportunity for our Kansas high school artists!

UPDATE:  On the evening of January 24th Brent and Molly were invited to attend a banquet at the Topeka Expocenter held by the Kansas Native Sons & Daughters celebrating Kansas Day.  Brent's and Molly's photographs were on display for all to enjoy and they also received their awards for Best of Show and 1st Place respectively!

New Work: Advanced Photography

What a fantastic semester I experienced with the Advanced Photography students!  They were a hard-working and creative bunch of young photographers.  I think this final gallery of work will easily back up my statements.  I am greatly looking forward to the spring semester where I will have a full class (30!) in Digital Photography 2 as well as two more sections of Advanced Photography.  More and more galleries will be on the way!!

New Work: Digital Photography 1

As the Fall 2013 semester came to a close I promised the Digital Photography 1 students I would make one last post showing off their work.  I had a TON of images to choose from!  Normally, I keep the number of images to 25 with previous posts, but this time I had quite a bit of difficulty narrowing them down.  So please enjoy this gallery of 32 photos that is literally the best of the semester!!
